MICHAEL F. ARVIN is in his 25th year of professional practice solving federal and state tax problems for clients. As an attorney and CPA, he represents many different types of taxpayers before the U.S. Department of Justice, the Internal Revenue Service and the Colorado Department of Revenue. He has significant tax controversy representation experience with self-employed individuals, as well as principals of privately-held business entities.

     Clients regularly rely upon Mr. Arvin for representation in civil and criminal tax matters arising from the enforcement activities of the Examination, Collection, Criminal Investigation and Appeals Divisions of the Internal Revenue Service, equivalent functions within the Colorado Department of Revenue, and the U.S. Department of Justice (Tax Division). He represents taxpayers before the United States District Courts in civil and criminal tax matters, and serves taxpayers as counsel before the United States Tax Court.

     In addition, Mr. Arvin has been asked to speak before professional groups on numerous occasions and has lectured on the following topics within the tax controversy arena: Grand Jury Practice in the Context of an IRS Criminal Tax Investigation, Federal Tax Lien Priority, Voluntary Disclosure in a Criminal Tax Case, Understanding IRS Collections, Advanced Strategies in IRS Offers in Compromise, What to Do When Your Client is Contacted by an IRS Special Agent, How to Handle an IRS Collection Appeal, and Getting an Offer in Compromise Accepted the First Time. In 1991, Mr. Arvin was asked by the IRS to teach formal, in-house classroom training to its Revenue Agents from a private-sector, “taxpayer’s side of the fence” perspective. He accepted 16 such guest invitations up until 1995, private practice obligations permitting. These assignments took Mr. Arvin from Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Jose, California to Portland, Oregon, Chicago, Illinois, and St. Paul, Minnesota.

     Mr. Arvin is a member of the American Bar Association (Section of Taxation, 1989-Present), the American Institute of CPAs (Tax Division, 1983-Present), the Greater Denver Tax Counsel Association (Secretary/Treasurer, 2008), the Faculty of Federal Advocates, and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
